Altınekin, formerly Zıvarık, was renamed in 1963; the new name means “golden crop” and refers to the fertility of its land, known for sugar beet. A 14th-century caravanserai, Zıvarık Han, survives from its days on the Seljuk trade route between Ankara and Konya, and Crimean Tatar families settled here in the early 1900s. It became a district in 1987.
