What is enterprise software?

When is an off-the-shelf package not enough?

If hours go every day into copying data between spreadsheets, if the same information is entered twice because two systems do not talk, or if you are adapting to the software instead of the other way round, custom development usually pays for itself quickly. Equally, writing a standard need from scratch is wasted money — and we say so up front.

What should be settled before starting

Who holds the source code, the hosting and the data; how maintenance and updates will run; and which documents are handed over if the system ever moves to another team — all of this belongs in writing in the contract.
