Elbistan lies on a broad, well-watered plain ringed by the Taurus Mountains, near the source of the Ceyhan River. The town has a long history, from the Hittite-era settlement of Lawazantiya to its role as the seat of the Dulkadirid beylik in the 14th century. The Elbistan coalfield supplies lignite to the nearby Afşin-Elbistan power stations. Many people from Elbistan moved to Europe in the 1960s and 1970s, and the 2023 earthquakes hit the town hard.
