EDR (endpoint detection and response) continuously records and analyses process, file, registry, network and user activity to detect suspicious behaviour, and lets responders isolate a device or kill a process. XDR extends this view with email, identity, cloud and network signals so that an attack can be seen as one chain of events. EDR versus antivirus
Classic antivirus recognises known malicious files by signature. Many modern attacks use freshly built malware or legitimate tools already on the system, leaving no file to match. EDR looks at behaviour, such as an office document launching a command shell or a process encrypting hundreds of files and deleting shadow copies, and keeps detailed telemetry for investigation.

Frequently asked questions
Why do we need EDR if we already have antivirus?
Antivirus catches known files; EDR detects malicious behaviour, including fileless attacks, and enables isolation and investigation.
Does EDR guarantee protection against ransomware?
No single tool does. EDR greatly reduces the risk by stopping attacks early, but MFA, patching, isolated backups and a tested response plan are still required.
