Halfeti sits near the east bank of the Euphrates. When the Birecik Dam reservoir filled, many villages and part of the old town went under water and the centre moved to Karaotlak. Today the half-submerged stone houses, boat trips on the river and the fortress of Rumkale on the opposite bank make Halfeti one of the region’s best-known destinations. It joined the Cittaslow network in 2013.
