Maçka is one of Trabzon’s largest districts. Its name goes back to Matzouka, a province of the Empire of Trebizond, and it is home to Sumela Monastery, set on a cliff above the Altındere valley inside Altındere Valley National Park, as well as Vazelon Monastery. The Trabzon–Gümüşhane road runs through the district, with stops such as Hamsiköy known for its rice pudding.
Sumela was closed in 2015 because of rock falls and reopened in 2019 after restoration, a reminder that businesses should not build their marketing around one attraction alone.
