Malkara is the largest district of Tekirdağ by area and one of Thrace’s agricultural centres. Most farmland around the town grows sunflowers for seeds and oil, wheat and cheese are key products, and Evliya Çelebi noted its honey, cheese and leather in the 17th century. The district also has coal mines, Thracian tumuli, a stretch of the Via Egnatia near Kermeyan and a popular picnic spot at Yenidibek.
