Saray lies in northern Tekirdağ where the Thracian plain begins to rise towards the Strandzha (Yıldız) hills. The district has not industrialised: half its land is farmed and half is forest and meadow, including Thrace’s only protected stands of Austrian pine. The hills to the north are popular for trekking, and the coastal village of Çamlıköy, formerly Kastro, draws walkers and picnickers. The town takes its name from the Crimean Giray dynasty settled here in the 18th century.
