Software asset management (SAM) is the discipline of inventorying all software and cloud subscriptions in an organisation and matching them against purchased licence rights, keeping both compliance and spend under control. It answers three questions with evidence: what do we own, what do we use, and what are we entitled to?
Why it matters
Licence problems cost money in two directions. Under-licensing, such as installations beyond entitlements or wrong usage rights, can lead to unexpected payments after a vendor audit. Over-licensing, such as subscriptions still assigned to former employees, unused applications or oversized packages, quietly wastes budget. Unsupported software that never appears in the inventory is also a security risk.

No. Headcount, projects and subscriptions change constantly, so the inventory needs periodic review and licence steps built into joiner and leaver processes.
Are cloud subscriptions included?
Yes. User-based subscriptions, operating system and database licences on IaaS resources and browser-based SaaS applications are all in scope.
