Soma’s economy has long been shaped by lignite. Underground mining and coal-fired power plants are the main activities, and one of Turkey’s larger wind farms stands on the surrounding hills. Discussions about a just transition away from coal are part of the local agenda, while olives, walnuts and almonds remain important crops.
