An SSL certificate encrypts traffic between your website and the visitor’s browser and proves that the site really belongs to your domain. The modern protocol is SSL/TLS; the old SSL versions are no longer secure, but the industry still calls them SSL certificates. Without one, browsers label your pages “Not secure” and any form data travels unprotected.
Choosing the right type
DV certificates validate domain control only, OV adds verification of your organisation, and EV applies the most extensive organisation checks. Encryption strength is the same across all three; the difference is validation and management. For many subdomains a wildcard certificate is practical, while a multi-domain (SAN) certificate covers different domains in one certificate. Note that a wildcard covers only one subdomain level.

Frequently asked questions
Is a free SSL certificate enough for a business site?
For encryption, free DV certificates are as strong as paid DV ones and often enough for brochure sites. We recommend OV or EV when you need your organisation verified in the certificate or when automated renewal is not possible.
Will moving to HTTPS hurt my rankings?
Not when redirects, canonicals, the sitemap and internal links are updated together. Most losses come from half-finished migrations.
