Yes. Domain-validated (DV) certificates are available free of charge from certificate authorities that automate issuance through the open ACME protocol. Their encryption, browser trust and SEO effect are the same as paid DV certificates.
- What differs: free certificates are DV only; OV and EV verify the organisation and are paid. Free certificates are short-lived, paid ones come with vendor support, and some special coverage needs are easier with paid options.
- Which to use: free DV suits most corporate sites, blogs and campaign pages; customer portals, dealer systems and regulated sectors may prefer OV or EV with central certificate management.
- Watch out: verify automatic renewal, keep validation paths open, re-issue after DNS changes, check CAA records and cover all hostnames.
An SSL certificate only encrypts the connection; updates, strong passwords, backups and a firewall are still needed. Racoun helps choose between free and paid certificates, installs them and monitors renewals.
