You do not have to set up a company to publish a mobile app. Both the App Store and Google Play allow individual developer accounts. However, there are good reasons to choose an organisation account:
- The company name appears as the developer, which builds trust.
- Ownership, partners, investment and transfers are easier to manage.
- Payment providers and business customers usually require a registered business.
- Some sensitive app categories may require an organisation account.
Apple requires a D-U-N-S number for organisation accounts, and Google may ask for business verification documents. If the app earns money through sales, subscriptions, in-app purchases or ads, tax obligations arise; confirm the current rules with your accountant. Privacy obligations under KVKK apply either way. Racoun recommends opening developer accounts in the brand’s own name so ownership always stays with the client.
