Duplicate content affects SEO, but usually through filtering rather than a penalty. Google picks one canonical version among similar pages and generally hides the rest, which can split ranking signals, surface the wrong URL and waste crawl resources. Deliberately copying or scraping content to manipulate rankings, however, falls under spam policies.
- Common causes: http/https and www variations, URL parameters, product variants, manufacturer descriptions, near-identical city pages, archives and indexable staging sites.
- Fixes: 301 redirects for URL variants, rel=canonical for similar pages, noindex for low-value pages, consistent internal linking, hreflang for language versions and genuinely unique descriptions.
Avoid canonicalising everything to the homepage or blocking duplicates in robots.txt, which hides canonical tags from Google. If your content is copied without permission, contact the site owner or use Google’s copyright process with legal advice. Racoun builds URL structure, canonicals and redirects correctly into every site on its own platform.
