A domain is your website’s address; hosting is the server space where the site’s files, images and database live. Think of the domain as the street number and hosting as the house itself. DNS records connect the two.
- Domain: a name registered for a fixed term with a registrar; it stores DNS records such as A and MX but holds no content.
- Hosting: server resources (CPU, memory, disk, bandwidth) that keep the site online; types include shared, VPS, cloud and dedicated servers.
- How they work together: the browser asks DNS for the IP behind the domain, connects to the hosting server and receives the page.
Buying both from one provider is simpler; keeping them separate makes switching hosts easier and isolates risks. Either way, the domain must be registered in the company’s name and the company must have access to both accounts. Common mistakes include expecting a site to go live with only a domain, forgetting one of the two renewal dates and cancelling hosting without realising email lives there. Racoun plans domain, hosting, SSL and email together.
