A GEO checklist helps a brand get recognised and cited correctly in AI answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Overviews. It works best in order, because content work cannot succeed on a weak technical base.
- Bot access: allow OAI-SearchBot, Googlebot, Bingbot and other search crawlers in robots.txt and at firewall level; blocking GPTBot or Google-Extended for training is a separate decision.
- Crawlability: indexed pages, correct canonicals, content visible without JavaScript and fast mobile pages.
- Structured data: Organization, ProfessionalService, Service, FAQPage and Breadcrumb markup that matches visible content.
- Entity information: a one-sentence brand definition, consistent address and service area, alternative names.
- Q&A content, independent mentions without manipulation and monthly citation tracking across four AI platforms.
- llms.txt as a low-cost optional extra; Google has said it does not use it.
Technical setup typically takes one to two weeks, and AI systems usually reflect changes within four to twelve weeks. No checklist can promise inclusion in an AI answer, but it removes the barriers that keep a brand invisible.
