How many years should you register a domain for?

One year is enough for a test project, but a company’s main domain is best registered for several years with auto-renew on. A longer term reduces the risk of forgetting a renewal and losing the domain.

For a company’s main domain, register it for several years and keep auto-renew on; for campaigns or test projects, one year is enough. The real safeguard is accurate contact details and a tracked renewal date.

  • Allowed terms: registrations are in yearly units; generic extensions such as .com allow up to ten years, while .tr limits follow TRABİS rules.
  • Early renewal adds to the remaining term, so no days are lost.
  • SEO: there is no reliable evidence that registration length is a direct ranking factor, but an expired, unreachable domain clearly hurts visibility.
  • Cost drivers: extension, first-year versus renewal price, number of years, add-ons and protective variants.

Common mistakes include assuming a ten-year registration needs no attention, tying auto-renew to an expired card and keeping the domain in an agency account. A simple policy helps: multi-year for core domains, one year for campaigns, all in one company account and one inventory. Racoun manages domain inventories and renewals together with hosting, SSL and email.
