This guide explains how to build a disaster recovery plan that actually works. Start with realistic scenarios such as a failed server, an unusable office, ransomware, a cloud outage or a compromised account, since each needs a different recovery path. Run a business impact analysis to rank processes and map them to the systems they depend on, then set RPO and RTO targets with business owners and check that current backups meet them.
Write down the recovery order, from network and identity to databases, applications and user access, and keep passwords, licence keys and diagrams in a secure place that stays reachable during an outage. Define roles, backups for each role, an alternative communication channel and message templates. Add a dedicated ransomware section covering isolation, credential resets, verification of immutable backups and restoring to a clean environment. Rehearse with tabletop exercises, partial restores and full recovery drills, and keep the plan alive through regular reviews.
