Microsoft 365 Licence Plans Guide: How to Choose Between Business, Enterprise and Frontline

A plain-language guide to the differences between Microsoft 365 plans, choosing plans by user group and deciding on commitment terms.

Microsoft 365 offers three broad plan families. Business plans (Basic, Standard, Premium) are designed for small and mid-sized organisations and have a seat limit; Business Premium adds device management, conditional access and Defender components. Enterprise plans such as E3 and E5 have no seat limit and add advanced compliance, security and analytics. Frontline plans such as F1 and F3 serve shop-floor, warehouse and field staff who mostly use shared or mobile devices.

Our guide recommends choosing plans by role rather than by person: group users, list must-have features for each group, check that security policies cover everyone, then match plans. Add-ons can cover specific needs without upgrading the whole company. On commitment terms, combine annual subscriptions for stable staff with monthly ones for variable staff. Finally, remember that buying a licence does not switch features on; conditional access, device policies and phishing protection must be configured to protect you. Review the structure at least once a year, ideally before annual renewals.
