How to Classify Data: A Step-by-Step Guide Before DLP

You cannot protect data you have not classified. A practical, step-by-step approach to building a data classification scheme in your company.

Many companies start data security by buying a tool, only to ask a few months later what exactly it should block. This guide explains data classification, the foundation of DLP and encryption. Classification groups information by how much harm its disclosure would cause and defines how each group must be stored, shared, encrypted and eventually destroyed.

We walk through six practical steps: define a simple scheme with around four levels (public, internal, confidential, highly confidential); build a data inventory through interviews and automated discovery; assign business data owners rather than leaving everything to IT; choose a labelling approach that combines user labels, default labels and automatic or recommended labels stored in document metadata; map each level to concrete protection rules that later become DLP, encryption and access policies; and train, measure and improve. We also cover retention and destruction as part of classification and list the most common mistakes, such as overly complex schemes and labels that are not tied to any control. Racurity, the cyber security brand of Pedante Bilişim, runs this process end to end through expert solution partners.
