How do you get an SSL certificate?

To get an SSL certificate, choose the type you need (DV, OV or EV), generate a CSR on the server, apply to a certificate authority, complete domain or organisation validation and install the issued certificate on the server.

An SSL certificate (technically TLS today) encrypts traffic between the browser and your server and proves the server belongs to the domain. Without it, browsers show a “not secure” warning, and any site with forms, logins or payments needs one.

  • Validation levels: DV checks domain control only; OV adds organisation verification; EV is the most thorough organisation check. Encryption strength is the same.
  • Coverage: single domain, wildcard for all first-level subdomains, or multi-domain (SAN).
  • Steps: define needs, choose a provider, generate a private key and CSR, apply, complete domain validation (email, DNS record or file) and, for OV/EV, organisation checks, then install the certificate with its intermediate chain.
  • Renewal: maximum certificate lifetimes are being shortened, so automated renewal is essential.

Watch for www coverage, CAA records and private key security. Racoun selects, sources through partners, installs and automates renewal of certificates, alongside wider website security measures.
