How do I get cited as a source in Google AI Overviews?

There is no special application or technique for being cited in Google AI Overviews: your page must be crawlable, indexed and snippet-eligible, answer the question clearly and be a trustworthy source. Citations cannot be guaranteed, only made more likely.

There is no application form, special tag or file that gets a page cited in Google AI Overviews. Google picks the source links from its normal search index, and its representatives have said that standard SEO is all it takes. A page must be crawlable, indexed and eligible to show with a snippet.

  • Check that Googlebot can reach the page and that robots.txt or noindex does not block it.
  • Review preview controls such as nosnippet and max-snippet, which also shape how content can be used in AI Overviews.
  • Answer one clear question per page and put a self-contained answer in the first sentences.
  • Use lists, clear subheadings and schema.org markup such as Organization, Service and FAQPage.
  • Make expertise visible with author, company and update information.

Google-Extended and llms.txt do not affect AI Overviews. Manipulation such as fake reviews or hidden prompts breaks spam policies. Citations vary by user and time, so no one can guarantee them; Racoun’s setup typically takes 1–2 weeks, and AI systems usually reflect changes within 4–12 weeks.
