How do you install an SSL certificate? (Step by step)

An SSL certificate is installed by uploading the certificate file, the intermediate chain and the private key to the server. HTTPS is then enabled, all HTTP traffic is permanently redirected to HTTPS and mixed content errors are cleaned up.

Installing an SSL certificate means configuring the certificate file, the intermediate chain and the matching private key on your web server or hosting panel, then moving the whole site to HTTPS.

  • Prepare files in the format your server expects (separate files or a full-chain bundle).
  • Configure the server to listen on port 443, test the configuration and reload.
  • Harden protocols by disabling outdated versions and weak ciphers.
  • Redirect all HTTP and non-canonical hostnames to a single HTTPS address with 301s.
  • Fix mixed content and update site URLs, canonicals, sitemaps and analytics.
  • Consider HSTS, starting short and increasing gradually.
  • Automate renewal via ACME where possible.

Typical errors are a missing intermediate chain, name mismatch, key mismatch, redirect loops and expired certificates. Handled correctly, the HTTPS move protects SEO. Racoun installs certificates, fixes chain issues and plans HTTPS migrations together with hosting.
