How to Migrate a Website Without Losing SEO

A website migration means taking a full backup, moving files, database and email to the new server, testing, switching DNS in a planned way and, if URLs or the domain change, setting up 301 redirects and notifying Search Console.

A website migration can mean moving to a new server, changing the domain, switching platforms or changing URL structure. Each carries different risks; domain and URL changes are the most sensitive for SEO.

  • Inventory accounts, DNS, email, integrations and tracking codes.
  • Export current performance data: top pages, queries and backlinks.
  • Take and verify a full backup of files, database and mailboxes.
  • Build a URL mapping table and plan direct 301 redirects to the most relevant pages.
  • Set up and test the new environment on a temporary address, blocked from indexing.
  • Lower DNS TTL in advance, switch during low traffic and carry over MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC records.
  • Submit the new sitemap, use Search Console’s change of address for domain moves and monitor errors closely.

Avoid redirecting everything to the home page, using 302s, leaving robots.txt blocks from staging or letting old hosting and domains expire. Racoun handles migration, DNS, email and post-launch SEO monitoring in one team.
