How do you migrate web hosting? (Step-by-step guide)

Hosting migration means taking a full backup, preparing the new server, copying files and the database, testing the site and then pointing DNS records to the new server. With planning, the site and email can move without downtime.

Migrating hosting means moving a website’s files, database and often its email accounts from one server to another while the domain name stays the same.

  • Inventory: list files, databases, mailboxes, subdomains, cron jobs, redirects and the SSL certificate.
  • Lower the DNS TTL a few days before the move so the change spreads quickly.
  • Take a full backup and store it outside the old server.
  • Prepare the new server with matching language versions, database type and limits.
  • Copy files and the database, then update connection settings.
  • Test before switching DNS by editing your local hosts file; check forms, logins and payments.
  • Install SSL in advance to avoid browser warnings.
  • Update the A record or nameservers and keep the old hosting running for several days.

Email needs special care: sync mailboxes over IMAP, update MX records last and rebuild SPF, DKIM and DMARC. Keeping URLs unchanged, minimising downtime and watching crawl errors protects SEO. Racoun’s technology team plans migrations end to end, covering site, email and certificates.
