How should you use structured data (schema) for AI search?

Structured data for AI search means describing your brand, services, products and Q&A with schema.org vocabulary, preferably in JSON-LD, keeping the markup identical to visible content and linking entities together.

Short answer: Structured data labels the information on a page with schema.org vocabulary, ideally as JSON-LD, so machines can read it without guessing. For AI visibility the priorities are Organization for the brand, Service or Product for offers, FAQPage for Q&A, Article and Person for authorship and BreadcrumbList for site hierarchy.

  • Build an entity inventory and a one-sentence brand definition first.
  • Add JSON-LD at template level and link entities with a stable @id.
  • Keep every marked-up fact visible on the page; fake ratings or hidden claims can trigger manual actions.
  • Validate with Google’s rich results testing tool and the schema.org validator, and maintain the markup when details change.

Search engines use schema to understand entities, and AI Overviews and Copilot draw on those search indexes, so the effect is largely indirect. Google says no special markup is needed for AI Overviews, and it narrowed FAQ rich results in 2023. Schema reduces the risk of being misunderstood; it does not guarantee citations or rich results. Racoun implements Organization, ProfessionalService, FAQPage, Service and Breadcrumb markup aligned with a brand entity card as part of its GEO service.
