A meta description is the short text shown under the title in search results. It is not a direct ranking factor, but it strongly influences whether people click.
- Summarise what the page offers in one or two sentences.
- Use the main keyword once, naturally.
- Put the most important information first, since long descriptions may be cut off.
- State a concrete benefit or differentiator instead of generic claims.
- Add a soft call to action where it fits.
- Keep it roughly within the length that displays fully, usually around 120 to 160 characters.
- Write a unique description for every page and read it together with the title tag.
Avoid duplicate descriptions, keyword lists, exaggerated claims and promises the page does not deliver. Prioritise pages with high impressions and low click-through rate in Search Console. Racoun-built sites let teams edit titles and descriptions from the admin panel, with template rules for large catalogues.
