ISO/IEC 42001 is the international standard for an AI Management System (AIMS). It asks organisations to manage AI the way they manage quality or information security: set objectives, assess risks, apply controls, measure and improve. It uses the same high-level structure as ISO 27001, so the two can run as one integrated system.
This guide explains five key concepts: the AIMS itself, the organisation’s role (developer, provider or user), the difference between risk assessment and impact assessment, the Statement of Applicability and human oversight. It also shows why many companies discover hidden AI use once they build an inventory, from CRM lead scoring to staff using personal chatbot accounts.
We outline a practical acceptable-use policy for generative AI, a simple impact assessment template and a 90-day roadmap: inventory and policy in month one, risk and impact assessment in month two, prioritised controls and training in month three. ISO 42001 does not replace the EU AI Act, but it builds the risk-management culture the regulation expects. Racurity, the security brand of Pedante Bilişim, supports organisations through this process.
