Static vs Dynamic Websites: What Is the Difference?

A static website serves the same pre-built files to every visitor, while a dynamic website generates content on the fly with server-side code and a database. Static sites are fast and simple; dynamic sites are manageable and interactive.

A static website consists of pre-built HTML files that every visitor sees in the same way. A dynamic website builds pages at request time using server-side code and a database, which enables admin panels, membership, search, carts and integrations.

  • Static: very fast, small attack surface, simple hosting; but updates require editing files and features are limited.
  • Dynamic: easy content management, rich features and personalisation; but needs more resources, regular updates and caching to stay fast.

Many modern projects use a hybrid approach: content is managed dynamically while pages are pre-rendered or cached for speed. To choose, ask who will update the content and how often, which features you need, whether the site will grow and how long it will live. Most corporate sites are best served by a performance-optimised structure with an admin panel. Racoun builds sites on its own infrastructure with an easy admin panel and speed optimisation.
