Visits from ChatGPT and Perplexity usually appear in your analytics tool as referral traffic from domains such as chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai. The practical approach is to group these sources into a dedicated AI channel and monitor landing pages, engagement and conversions.
- Create a custom channel group or segment that matches AI sources with a simple pattern, and place it before the default referral rule.
- Define conversions such as form submissions, phone or WhatsApp clicks and purchases for this channel.
- Check server logs for ChatGPT-User, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot to see which pages are fetched; these are bots, not human visits.
- Clicks from Google AI Overviews and AI Mode are part of Google organic traffic and are reported in Search Console’s Web performance data, not as a separate analytics source.
Some AI visits arrive without referrer information and look like direct traffic, so treat the measured figure as a lower bound. Interfaces and referral behaviour change over time; check the current documentation of your analytics tool. Racoun combines this traffic view with monthly AI citation tracking in its GEO reporting.
