Core Web Vitals are three metrics Google uses to measure page experience:
- LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): how fast the main content loads; good is 2.5 seconds or less.
- INP (Interaction to Next Paint): how quickly the page responds to interactions; good is 200 milliseconds or less. It replaced FID in 2024.
- CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): how much the layout unexpectedly moves; good is 0.1 or less.
Google evaluates them using real user data at the 75th percentile, visible in the Core Web Vitals report in Search Console. To improve them, optimise and prioritise the main image, reduce render-blocking and third-party scripts, break up long JavaScript tasks and reserve space for images, ads and banners. Core Web Vitals do not outweigh relevant content, but they strongly affect user experience and conversions.
