A backlink is a link from another website to yours. Google reads natural links from trusted, relevant sites as a signal of credibility, so backlinks remain an important ranking factor. Quality matters far more than quantity.
- Quality signals: topical relevance, trustworthy source, natural placement, descriptive anchor text and diversity.
- Link attributes: followed links pass signals; nofollow, sponsored and ugc attributes mark links that should not, and paid links must be labelled.
- Safe methods: linkable content, digital PR, partner and association links, expert contributions, events, unlinked brand mentions and broken link outreach.
- Risky methods: bulk link packages, excessive link exchanges, automated comment links and private blog networks, which violate Google’s spam policies.
