A cloud server is a virtual server that draws CPU, memory and storage from a pooled, virtualised infrastructure in a data centre. It is managed over the internet, can be launched in minutes and scaled as demand grows.
- Versus dedicated servers: a dedicated server is one physical machine; a cloud server is more flexible to scale.
- Versus VPS: a classic VPS is a slice of one machine; cloud servers draw from a pool, although providers use the terms loosely.
- Service models: cloud servers are typical IaaS; PaaS manages the platform for you; SaaS is a ready-made application.
- Shared responsibility: the provider secures the physical layer; patching, firewall rules, access and backups are usually the customer’s job.
