What Is a Native Mobile App? Pros and Cons

A native mobile app is built separately for each operating system using its own language and tools, such as Swift for iOS and Kotlin for Android, offering top performance and full device access.

A native mobile app is developed separately for each operating system using its own language and official tools: Swift and Xcode for iOS, Kotlin and Android Studio for Android. There is no translation layer or web wrapper.

  • Advantages: top performance, full access to device features, fast adoption of new OS capabilities, platform-consistent user experience, strong security and fewer store review surprises.
  • Disadvantages: two separate codebases, higher development and maintenance effort, and the need for both iOS and Android expertise.

Native is the right choice for hardware-heavy, performance-critical, security-sensitive or platform-specific products. Many catalogue, booking, loyalty or content apps can be served well by cross-platform frameworks such as Flutter or React Native. Racoun helps clients choose between native and cross-platform based on real requirements and builds the backend and admin panel alongside the app.
