A virtual POS is a digital payment infrastructure that lets customers pay by credit or debit card on your website, mobile app or payment link. It is the online equivalent of an in-store card terminal and is obtained through a merchant agreement with a bank or a licensed payment institution.
- Bank virtual POS: a direct agreement with one bank, usually preferred by established businesses.
- Payment institution: one agreement covering cards from many banks, often faster to start with.
- Hosted page or API: customers are redirected to a secure page or pay inside your site through an API.
Virtual POS systems handle single and instalment payments, 3D Secure verification, refunds, tokenised repeat payments and payment links. When choosing one, compare the commission structure, settlement time, instalment options, security standards, documentation and reporting. Card data should never be stored on your own server. Racoun integrates virtual POS providers into the online stores it builds on its own infrastructure, including 3D Secure flows, instalment tables and refunds.
