A WebView app displays a website or web app inside a mobile app shell using the operating system’s embedded browser component (WKWebView on iOS, WebView on Android). Content comes from the server, so web updates appear in the app without a new store release.
- Advantages: quick start, a single content source and lower initial development effort; practical for internal tools.
- Risks: store rejection for minimal functionality, weaker user experience, poor offline behaviour, limited device access, security configuration issues and in-app payment rules.
WebView differs from hybrid apps, which package web-based interfaces with device plugins, and from PWAs, which are added to the home screen from the browser. It makes sense for internal apps, temporary tests or individual content screens inside a native app, but rarely as a way to simply put a website in the stores.
