What is API integration and how does it work?

API integration lets two or more software systems exchange data automatically through defined rules, such as an online store pulling stock from ERP or tracking numbers from a carrier.

Short answer: An API (Application Programming Interface) defines how a piece of software talks to others. API integration is the connection that lets two or more systems exchange data automatically through that interface, for example an online store pulling stock and prices from ERP or tracking numbers from a carrier.

  • How it works: a request is sent to an endpoint with credentials, the other system processes it and returns a response, usually in JSON, which is mapped into your system and logged.
  • Approaches: REST, SOAP, GraphQL and webhooks.
  • Examples: e-commerce with ERP, marketplaces, virtual POS, shipping, e-invoice, CRM and mobile app back ends.

Key concerns are HTTPS, secure key storage, least privilege, error handling and retries, rate limits, version changes, logging and KVKK. Racoun builds ERP, payment, shipping, e-invoice and marketplace integrations on its own e-commerce platform and connects enterprise systems in custom software projects.
