Short answer: ASO (App Store Optimization) is the practice of improving an app’s visibility in App Store and Google Play search and increasing the share of store visitors who install it. It is essentially SEO for app stores.
ASO has two sides:
- Visibility: app name, subtitle or short description, keyword field, long description, plus signals such as ratings, retention and crash rate.
- Conversion: icon, screenshots with clear captions, preview video, and fresh, well-answered reviews.
A good process covers keyword research, copywriting, visual storytelling, review management, localisation and ongoing A/B testing with store tools. Avoid keyword stuffing and fake reviews, which break store policies. Store limits and rules change, so check the current guidelines before editing.
