What is backup and why does it matter?

Backup is keeping copies of data in a separate location to protect against loss, deletion, corruption or ransomware. It matters because a reliable backup is often the only way to recover after hardware failure, human error or attack.

Backup means keeping copies of your data in a separate place so it can be restored after loss. Data is lost through hardware failure, human error, ransomware, software bugs, theft and physical incidents.

  • Types: full, incremental and differential backups; snapshots and sync are not backups on their own.
  • 3-2-1 rule: three copies, on two different media, with one off-site; add an immutable or isolated copy against ransomware.
  • RPO and RTO: how much data you can afford to lose and how quickly systems must be back.
  • Common mistakes: never testing restores, keeping backups in the same place, ignoring cloud application data and leaving backups unencrypted.

Racoun’s Pedante Bilişim team designs backup structures around your RPO and RTO targets and runs regular restore tests.
