Short answer: Google-Extended is a robots.txt product token that lets publishers decide whether content Google crawls may be used to train future Gemini models and to ground Gemini answers. It is not a separate crawler and it does not affect Google Search rankings, indexing, AI Overviews or AI Mode.
- Googlebot crawls for Google Search, including AI Overviews and AI Mode; blocking it removes a site from those surfaces.
- Google-Extended controls use of content for Gemini training and grounding.
- nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet limit how much of a page is shown in search results, AI features included.
To opt out, add a “User-agent: Google-Extended” group with the relevant Disallow paths and leave the Googlebot group untouched. Keep in mind that blocking it may also reduce the chance that the Gemini app draws on your pages when answering. AI Overviews and AI Mode started rolling out in Türkiye on 18 February 2026 and are powered by the Gemini 3 model family, so ranking there depends on regular SEO rather than this token. Check Google’s current crawler documentation before making changes.
