What Is Internal Linking and How Do You Do It?

Internal linking means pages on the same website linking to each other. Done well, it helps visitors navigate, helps Google discover pages and passes authority to your most important pages.

Internal linking is the practice of linking from one page of your website to another page on the same domain. Menus, footers, breadcrumbs and in-content links are all internal links.

Search engines discover pages mostly by following links, so a well-planned internal linking structure helps Google find, understand and prioritise your pages. It also guides visitors towards the next useful step and passes authority from strong pages to commercially important ones.

  • Identify priority pages such as services, categories and products.
  • Build topic clusters: a pillar page supported by related articles that link to each other.
  • Find and fix orphan pages that receive no internal links.
  • Use descriptive, natural anchor text instead of “click here”.
  • Keep important pages within a few clicks of the homepage and clean up broken links regularly.

Racoun builds sites on its own infrastructure with breadcrumbs, related content blocks and clean URLs from day one, and audits existing sites to create a cluster-based internal linking plan.
