What is LLMO? The difference between GEO, AEO and LLMO

LLMO (Large Language Model Optimization) is the work of making sure large language models such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude describe your brand accurately and consistently. GEO, AEO and LLMO overlap; they mainly differ in emphasis.

LLMO (Large Language Model Optimization) is the work of making sure large language models such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude describe your brand accurately, consistently and with current information.

  • GEO focuses on mentions and citations in generative search answers.
  • AEO focuses on being selected as the direct answer by snippets, voice assistants and AI tools.
  • LLMO focuses on what a model knows and says about your brand.

Models get information in two ways: training data, which only changes with new model versions, and live web retrieval, which reflects updated pages much faster. Each path has its own crawlers, for example GPTBot for OpenAI training and OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search, so access decisions should be made deliberately and checked against current platform documentation. Practical steps include a one-sentence brand definition used everywhere, consistent entity data with Organization markup, correcting wrong information at its source and testing a fixed question set regularly. Manipulative tactics such as hidden prompts or fake forum accounts are risky and should be avoided.
