What is phishing and how can you protect yourself?

Phishing is a fake e-mail, SMS or message in which an attacker impersonates a trusted party to steal passwords, card details or trigger payments. Protection combines MFA, SPF/DKIM/DMARC, filtering and staff awareness.

Phishing is a social engineering attack in which a criminal impersonates a bank, courier, supplier or executive to make you click a link, enter a password or make a payment. Common variants include mass phishing, spear phishing, CEO fraud and business e-mail compromise, SMS and voice phishing, QR code phishing and fake login pages.

Warning signs: a sender address that does not match the display name, urgent or threatening language, links whose real destination differs from the text, unexpected attachments and unusual requests such as gift cards or bank detail changes.

  • Enable multi-factor authentication on all accounts.
  • Configure SPF, DKIM and DMARC for your domain.
  • Use an e-mail security solution and endpoint protection (EDR).
  • Verify payment or bank detail changes by phone.
  • Run short, regular awareness training and simulations, and make reporting easy.

If someone clicked, report it immediately, change passwords, revoke sessions and isolate the device. Racurity, part of Racoun’s technology unit, reviews e-mail authentication and deploys e-mail security through expert solution partners.
