What is ransomware?

Ransomware is malware that encrypts files on computers and servers, or threatens to publish stolen data, and demands a ransom. The strongest defences are immutable backups, MFA, patching, EDR and a ready incident response plan.

Ransomware is malware that encrypts a company’s files or locks devices and demands payment to restore access, often also threatening to publish stolen data (double extortion). Attacks usually start with phishing, stolen remote access credentials or unpatched systems, then spread through the network, steal data and try to destroy backups before encrypting.

  • Follow the 3-2-1 backup rule with at least one immutable or offline copy, and test restores.
  • Use MFA everywhere, separate admin accounts and never expose remote desktop directly to the internet.
  • Patch internet-facing systems first, deploy EDR/XDR and segment the network.
  • Monitor logs, as most attacks leave traces before encryption.

If hit, isolate affected devices without shutting them down, activate the incident response plan, verify backups are clean, reset credentials and start personal data breach notification if needed. Paying is generally discouraged. Racurity designs backup, EDR and SOC layers through expert solution partners.
