A good logo is simple, memorable and appropriate for the brand’s personality and audience. It should stay legible from favicon size to a building facade, work in a single colour on both dark and light backgrounds, avoid short-lived trends and be original.
Eight qualities to check:
- Simple
- Memorable
- Appropriate for brand and audience
- Scalable
- Works in one colour
- Timeless
- Original
- Systematic, with versions and usage rules
Colour sets the emotional tone but should be chosen with competitors in mind; one main colour and one or two supporting colours are usually enough, each defined for print and screen. Typography is the brand’s voice and must remain readable at small sizes with a valid commercial licence.
Common mistakes include trying to say everything in one mark, using too many colours, relying on trendy effects and testing only on screen. Racoun tests every logo against these principles in real-life applications.
