Which programming language is used to build a website?

Every website front end uses HTML, CSS and JavaScript; the back end runs on a server-side language such as PHP, Python, C#, Java or Node.js plus a database. The right choice depends on needs and maintainability.

A website is built with several technologies working together, not a single language.

  • Front end: HTML for structure, CSS for styling and responsive layout, JavaScript (often with React, Vue or TypeScript) for interactivity.
  • Back end: a server-side language such as PHP, Python, Node.js, C# or Java that handles forms, logins, products and integrations.
  • Database: MySQL or PostgreSQL for related data, document databases for flexible structures, Redis for caching.

To choose, define the project type, list integrations (ERP, CRM, payment, shipping), estimate scale and think about who will maintain the site for years. Avoid picking a stack just because it is trendy, and make sure search engines can read your content. Visitors rarely notice the language; they notice speed and usability. Racoun, backed by the Pedante software team, codes sites on its own infrastructure with technical SEO and performance built in.
