GEO Glossary: Key Terms of AI Search

Key terms of AI search and Generative Engine Optimization, explained in plain language.

The GEO Glossary by Racoun explains, in short and plain definitions, the terms that come up in Generative Engine Optimization and AI visibility work. Each entry opens with a one-sentence definition and then explains why the term matters for being mentioned and cited in AI-generated answers.

What the glossary covers

  • Concepts: GEO, AEO, LLMO, AIO, generative search, the historical term SGE, zero-click search and share of voice.
  • Google features: AI Overviews and AI Mode, which began rolling out gradually in Türkiye on 18 February 2026, and the query fan-out technique used by AI Mode.
  • How AI answers are built: large language models, tokens, embeddings, semantic search, retrieval-augmented generation, grounding, knowledge cutoff, passages and hallucination.
  • Crawlers and access control: robots.txt, GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Googlebot, Google-Extended, Bingbot and Applebot-Extended.
  • Structured data and entities: schema.org, JSON-LD, FAQPage, Organization schema, sameAs, knowledge graph, entity consistency and the brand entity card.
  • Content and authority: quotability, question-and-answer content architecture, topic clusters, internal linking, comparison content, topical authority, E-E-A-T and YMYL.
  • Local and measurement: Google Business Profile, NAP consistency, review signals, citation tracking, prompt sets, referral traffic, UTM parameters and Search Console.

A note on accuracy

Crawler names, platform features and interfaces change over time. The definitions give the general framework; always check each platform’s current documentation before making decisions. The glossary also explains why manipulative tactics such as hidden instructions for AI systems (prompt injection) or fake reviews are risky and are never part of a sustainable GEO strategy.
