How to Build a Multilingual Website

A multilingual website is built by choosing target markets and languages, giving each language its own crawlable URL structure, localising rather than machine-translating content, adding hreflang tags and managing all languages from one panel.

A multilingual website presents your business to different language markets, which is essential for exporters, hotels, health providers, B2B suppliers and cross-border online stores.

  • Choose target markets and languages first; language and market are not the same thing.
  • Use a crawlable URL structure for each language, usually subfolders such as /en/.
  • Localise rather than translate: units, currency, formats, terminology and culture.
  • Research keywords separately for each language.
  • Implement reciprocal hreflang tags and an x-default where useful.
  • Localise meta titles, descriptions and alt text; build a language switcher that keeps users on the equivalent page.
  • Avoid forced IP-based redirects and prepare forms, emails and privacy texts in each language.

Typical mistakes are one-click machine translation, identical URLs across languages and broken hreflang. Racoun builds multilingual sites on its own infrastructure with language versions, hreflang and metadata managed from one panel.
