A domain name is the human-readable address of a website, such as yourcompany.com. Computers find each other by numeric IP addresses; DNS translates the name into the IP of the server where the site is hosted, and MX records tell the world where to deliver email for that domain.
- Parts: the extension (.com, .net, .tr), an optional second level (.com.tr), your chosen name and optional subdomains such as shop.yourcompany.com.
- Types: generic extensions, country-code extensions (in Türkiye managed through TRABİS) and restricted extensions such as .edu.tr or .av.tr that require documents.
- Ownership: a domain is registered for a fixed term, and it belongs to whoever is listed as the registrant, so it should be registered in the company’s own name.
A domain gives you a permanent web address, professional email, brand protection and a home for campaign pages. Common mistakes include registering it in an agency’s or employee’s name, leaving auto-renew off and skipping two-factor authentication. Racoun helps companies choose, register and manage domains alongside their website and email.
