Short answer: A ChatGPT ad is a paid card shown below the answer with an “Ad” label. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is organic work aimed at getting your brand mentioned inside the answer as a source or recommendation. According to OpenAI, ads do not influence answers, so advertising does not place you inside the answer. The two approaches complement each other rather than replace each other.
Main differences
- Cost: ads are bought in an auction (CPM, CPC or optimized bidding); GEO has no media cost but requires content and technical work.
- Control: you write the ad copy and choose the image, while ChatGPT phrases its own answers.
- Speed: ads can go live once verification and setup are complete; GEO is a longer-term effort.
- Audience: ads reach only adult users on the Free and Go plans; organic mentions can reach every user, including ad-free paid plans.
- Eligibility: prohibited industries cannot advertise, and trying to get around the policy is risky.
Working together and measuring separately
Build one shared question map, test messages with ads, move winning messages into your site content and keep landing pages clear and verifiable. In analytics, treat ChatGPT traffic with your campaign UTMs as paid and untagged ChatGPT referrals as organic. Racoun runs both through its ChatGPT ads management service and its GEO work.
